One of my cats is showing some strange behavior lately. I have one of
those litter boxes with the cover on the top. Lately, my youngest cat
has been sitting just outside the litter box with his head inside the
cover. He does this whether the litter box has just been cleaned or
not.

When I call him, he'll look at me, but then turn right back around and
stick his head in the box again. It's kind of bizarre.

Anyone else ever seen this and/or know what might cause this behavior?

Take the tv set out of the litterbox and he'll stop! <giggle>

Does the cat go in and use the litter box? Is he afraid of something?

I'm wondering if he saw a bug at one point. Our cats will remember where
a bug was for a couple of days, and continually check to see if it's
still there.

Hi Rhonda,

I don't think he's afraid of anything, perhaps just a bit mental <G>.
He uses the litter box just fine, but he'll spend 20 minutes just
staring inside of it.

If there were a bug in there, he'd be tearing it apart to catch it.
My house stays insect free because of this guy!

I wonder if this is the same kind of issue he had with my ceiling fans
when I first got him. He used to stare at them, occasionally
squawking up at them. Whatever issue he had with them, he seems to
have resolved it years ago. Hopefully this litter fascination will
pass as well.

hour staring into the box one day... It was kinda creepy after a little

Like someone else who replied to this asks, is the cat using the box? If not,
you will be finding tootsie rolls on the floor, probably under furniture, soon.

The kitty is probably just watching over his turds. Cats and other four footed
folk, are funny about their turds.
Turds, for some reason, are much more signifigant in the four footed world,
than in ours, where we just flush em and forget em.
Kitty is probably just guarding against the "turd burglar".
You should see how my cats act when I clean the litter box. My cleaning routine
consists of taking the entire box down to the apartment dumpster, dumping the
damn thing out, and, bringing it back up, and re filling it with clean litter.
When I do this, the kitties are all over it, from start to finish. They really
wonder, it seems, what I am doing with their shit box.

Yes, he's using the box like he always has. No problems there.

I guess he's the only one with that kind of concern. The other cat
always tries to sneak in another one when he sees me approach it for
cleaning....a good thing since it keeps the box clean that much
longer.
